How To Build A Kite - Make A Kite

It is easy to build your own kite but 1st you must understand what the main elements are in a kite. The main parts in a kite are:
  • The Spine
  • The Spar
  • The Frame
  • The Cover
  • The Bridle
  • The Flying Line
  • The Tail
  • The Flying Line

Lets explain these parts in more detail:

The spine is the main support or backbone of the kite, this is usually built around a few vertical rods or sticks, these need to be as light as possible of course, and also strong. The spar is an additional stick or rod that runs crossways or perpendicular to the spine and helps define the shape of the kite. Spars can be either straight or curved depending on the required shape of the kite. The frame is the name given to the combination of the spine and the spar.

The cover is the material that is used to cover the frame, this is what will capture the wind and provide lift to the kite, the cover can be made of many materials including paper, plastic or cloth, it has to be strong and again has to be light weight.

The bridle, just as for a horse, is what is used to control the kite, this is usually serveral strings attached to the corners of the kite. The flying line is then attached to the bridle center point and runs down to the kite flyer. To keep a kite stable and in balance many kites need to have a tail, this is usually a short length of string or plastic that acts like an air anchor to keep the kite in the right position. Not all kites need a tail. The reel is of course where you wind and unwind the flying line.
